Large numbers, fractions and area

Everything else in maths is built on number sense: what a number means, how place value works, and why a method like carrying or long division gives the right answer. Kanakku draws every sum as a picture first (coins, ten frames, place-value blocks), so the method makes sense before it becomes routine. It is the right place to start whether you are learning this for the first time or filling old gaps.

Large numbers

Place value to ten thousands, number names and rounding.

Key idea

Big numbers are read in groups. The comma helps: 45,678 is forty-five thousand, six hundred seventy-eight.

How to do it

  1. Use the comma to split the number into groups.
  2. Read each group with its name: thousand, then hundreds.
  3. To round, look at the digit just to the right of the place you are rounding to.
Practise large numbers

Multiply & divide

Bigger multiplications and long division, step by step.

Key idea

Break big numbers into parts. Division is the opposite of multiplication.

How to do it

  1. Multiply: split the number into hundreds, tens and ones. Multiply each part, then add.
  2. Divide: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down. Start from the left.
  3. Check division by multiplying back.
Practise multiply & divide

Time & calendar

Clocks to the minute, am and pm, how long, and calendars.

Key idea

An hour has 60 minutes. am is before noon, pm is after noon.

How to do it

  1. Read the hour from the short hand and the minutes from the long hand.
  2. To find how long something takes: count on to the next hour, then add the rest.
  3. Remember: 60 minutes make an hour, not 100.
Practise time & calendar

Money

Rupees and paise, bills, change and the price of one.

Key idea

₹1 = 100 paise. Add prices for a bill, subtract for change, divide to find the price of one.

How to do it

  1. For a bill, add all the prices. Line up the ones.
  2. For change, subtract the bill from the money paid.
  3. For the price of one, divide the total by how many.
Practise money

Symmetry & patterns

Lines of symmetry and number patterns.

Key idea

A line of symmetry splits a shape into two halves that match exactly when you fold it.

How to do it

  1. Imagine folding the shape along the line.
  2. Do both halves cover each other exactly?
  3. Try folding in different directions: up-down, side to side, corner to corner.
Practise symmetry & patterns

Bar graphs

Read bar graphs: most, least, how many more, total.

Key idea

A bar graph shows numbers as bars. A taller bar means a bigger number.

How to do it

  1. Read the title and the labels.
  2. Go to the top of a bar, then look across to the scale.
  3. Compare the bars to find the most, the least and the difference.
Practise bar graphs

Fractions

Pizzas, chocolate bars and the fraction wall.

Key idea

In India we count ones, thousands, lakhs and crores. 1 lakh = 1,00,000.

How to do it

  1. Put commas from the right: after 3 digits, then after every 2.
  2. Read each group: lakhs, then thousands, then hundreds, tens and ones.
  3. A digit's value = the digit × its place.
Practise fractions

Perimeter & Area

Fences, tiles, and drawing shapes on a grid.

Practise perimeter & area

Times tables

Learn the tricky tables with dots and tricks.

Practise times tables

Story Quest

Chennai story sums with 3-digit numbers.

Practise story quest

Mistake Detective

Catch Kutty's careless mistakes in sums.
