Numbers to 999, money and time

Everything else in maths is built on number sense: what a number means, how place value works, and why a method like carrying or long division gives the right answer. Kanakku draws every sum as a picture first (coins, ten frames, place-value blocks), so the method makes sense before it becomes routine. It is the right place to start whether you are learning this for the first time or filling old gaps.

Numbers to 999

Hundreds, tens and ones with blocks.

Key idea

Every digit has a place: ones, tens, hundreds. A ten rod is ten ones joined together.

How to do it

  1. Count the hundred squares first.
  2. Then count the ten rods.
  3. Then the one cubes.
  4. Write the digits in that order.

Adding 2-digit numbers

Add the ones, then the tens. Carry when you need to.

Key idea

Add the ones first, then the tens. Ten ones make one ten.

How to do it

  1. Write the numbers in columns: tens under tens, ones under ones.
  2. Add the ones. If they make 10 or more, carry 1 to the tens.
  3. Add the tens, and the carry.
  4. Check: is the answer close to your guess?

Subtracting 2-digit numbers

Take away the ones, then the tens. Borrow when you need to.

Key idea

If there are not enough ones, break a ten into 10 ones.

How to do it

  1. Write the numbers in columns.
  2. Start with the ones. If the top digit is smaller, borrow 1 ten.
  3. Make the tens digit 1 less, and add 10 to the ones.
  4. Check by adding: answer + the number you took away = the top number.

Money

Count coins and notes, shop and get change.

Key idea

Add up coins and notes to find how much money. Change is what you get back.

How to do it

  1. Start with the biggest coin or note.
  2. Count on for each of the others.
  3. For change: count up from the price to the money you gave.

Time

O'clock and half past, days and months.

Key idea

The short hand shows the hour. The long hand shows the minutes.

How to do it

  1. Look at the short hand: that is the hour.
  2. Long hand on 12: it is something o'clock.
  3. Long hand on 6: it is half past.
