Two equations make two lines. Where they cross is the answer to both.
Look: x + y = 7 and x − y = 1 cross at (4, 3).
✏️ Your turn!
Type your answer and press Check. Kutty will tell you if it is right.
1x + y = 10, x − y = 4
2y = 2x − 1 and 3x + y = 9
3Parallel lines: how many answers?
! Careful!
✗Stopping after finding x.
✓Go back and find y too.
✗Subtracting only the left sides.
✓Subtract both sides.

Two equations make two lines. Where they cross is the answer to both.
Solve them together: add or subtract the equations to get rid of one letter, find the other letter, then go back for the first.
Think of it like thisTwo roads drawn on a map cross at exactly one junction. That junction is on both roads.
Solved together
Two numbers add to 7. Their difference is 1. Find them.
Write two equations.
x + y = 7x − y = 1Add them: the y’s cancel out.
2x = 8x = 4Put x = 4 back in.
4 + y = 7y = 3
AnswerThe numbers are 4 and 3.
