Start with the bigger number. Then count on for the other number. A trick: make 10 first, then add the rest.

Solved together

Question

8 children are on the swings. 5 more come. How many now?

  1. Children come together, so we add.

    8 + 5 = ?
  2. 8 needs 2 more to make 10. Take 2 from the 5.

    8 + 2 = 10
    8 + 2 = 103 left
    8 + 2 = 103 left
  3. 3 are left. 10 and 3 more is 13.

    10 + 3 = 13

Answer8 + 5 = 13 children.
