A fraction can be more than one whole: 7/4 is 1¾.

If the top is bigger than the bottom, you have more than a whole. When the bottoms are the same, add the tops and keep the bottom.

Think of it like thisYou eat one whole pizza (4 slices) and 3 slices of another. That is 7 quarter slices, or 1¾ pizzas.
