A power is repeated multiplying: 2⁵ = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2.
The small raised number says how many times to multiply. 2⁵ = 32. Powers grow very fast.
Think of it like thisOne germ splits into 2, then 4, then 8, then 16. Each time it doubles: that is powers of 2.
- Square, cube
- 5² = 25 and 5³ = 125.

What is 3⁴?
Multiply 3 by itself, 4 times.
3 × 3 × 3 × 3Step by step.
3 × 3 = 99 × 3 = 2727 × 3 = 81
Answer3⁴ = 81.
For older learners and grown-ups: a little more
Same base: multiply → add the powers (3⁴ × 3² = 3⁶); divide → subtract (3⁶ ÷ 3³ = 3³); power of a power → multiply ((5²)³ = 5⁶). Big numbers in standard form: 81,000 = 8.1 × 10⁴.
