A rational number is any number you can write as a fraction, positive or negative.
Negative fractions sit left of 0, like mirror images of positive ones. Between any two of them, there is always another one: just go half way.
Think of it like this−3½°C, ¾ of a cake and ₹12.50 are all rational numbers. Each has its own spot on the number line.
