Line the numbers up from the right, then work column by column.
Look: Ones 8 + 6 = 14: write 4, carry 1. Tens 5 + 7 + 1 = 13: write 3, carry 1. Then 3 + 4 + 1 = 8 and 1 + 2 = 3.

Line the numbers up from the right, then work column by column.
Work from the ones to the thousands. Adding: carry when a column makes 10 or more. Subtracting: break one from the next column when you need to. Guess first so you can check.
Think of it like thisLike stacking bricks: ones on ones, tens on tens. If a column gets too full, pass a bundle of ten to the next column.

Solved together
A library had 5,203 books. It gave away 1,847. How many are left?
Guess first: about 5,200 − 1,800 = 3,400.
Ones: 3 − 7 needs more. The tens are 0, so break a hundred into 10 tens, then a ten into 10 ones.
13 − 7 = 6Tens: 9 − 4 = 5. Hundreds: 1 − 8 needs more, so break a thousand: 11 − 8 = 3. Thousands: 4 − 1 = 3.
Check by adding: 3,356 + 1,847 = 5,203. ✓
Answer3,356 books are left.
