Big numbers get a new room: thousands.

In 4,725 the 4 means 4,000. 10 hundreds make 1 thousand. The comma helps you read it: four thousand, seven hundred and twenty-five.

Think of it like this10 small boxes fit in a bigger box. 10 bigger boxes fit in a crate. Ones, tens, hundreds, thousands work the same way: each is 10 of the one before.
