Dividing is sharing equally.
12 ÷ 3 means share 12 into 3 equal groups. Each group gets 4, because 3 × 4 = 12. Sometimes a few are left over.
Think of it like this12 cookies, 3 friends. Give one to each friend, again and again, until they are all gone. Each friend gets 4.
- ÷
- Shared equally into.
- Left over
- What cannot be shared equally.
Solved together
17 children go on a trip. Each car takes 5. How many cars do they need?
Make groups of 5. 5 × 3 = 15 fits. 5 × 4 = 20 is too many.
17 ÷ 5 = 3, left over 23 full cars, and 2 children still waiting.
Those 2 children need a car too!
3 + 1 = 4 cars
AnswerThey need 4 cars.
