The idea

For an odd shape, cut it into rectangles, then add their areas.

Look: An L-shaped room. The dashed line cuts it into a 4 × 8 piece and a 6 × 3 piece.

✏️ Your turn!

Type your answer and press Check. Kutty will tell you if it is right.

  1. 1A 12 × 8 m garden has a 4 × 3 m pond. Grass area?

  2. 2Join a 5 × 2 and a 3 × 2 rectangle. Total area?

  3. 3Perimeter of the L-shaped room?

! Careful!

  • ✗Counting the dashed cut line in the perimeter.

✓Perimeter is only the outside edge.

  • ✗Using 10 m for the bottom piece.

    ✓Part of the 10 m is already used: 10 − 4 = 6 m.

For an odd shape, cut it into rectangles, then add their areas.

Find the area of each rectangle and add them. For the perimeter, walk all the way round the outside edge.

Think of it like thisAn L-shaped room is just two rectangles stuck together. Cut it with a line and do each one.

Question

Find the area of the L-shaped room in the picture.

  1. Tall piece: 4 m wide, 8 m high.

    4 × 8 = 32 m²
  2. Bottom piece: the rest of the 10 m, so 6 m wide, 3 m high.

    6 × 3 = 18 m²
  3. Add the two pieces.

    32 + 18 = 50 m²

AnswerThe area is 50 m².

Now practise it
