To add fractions, first make the pieces the same size.
Look: Halves and thirds both fit into sixths. 3 sixths + 2 sixths = 5 sixths.

! Careful!
✗½ + ⅓ = 2/5 (adding tops and bottoms).
✓Make the pieces match first: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
✗Changing only the bottom: ⅓ = 1/6.
✓Change both: ⅓ = 2/6.

To add fractions, first make the pieces the same size.
½ = 3/6 and ⅓ = 2/6. Now the pieces match, so ½ + ⅓ = 5/6. Change the top and bottom by the same amount.
Think of it like thisYou cannot easily add half a cake and a third of a cake. Cut both into sixths first. Then just count the sixths.
- Common bottom
- A bottom number both fractions can use.
Solved together
¼ + ⅓ = ?
Quarters and thirds both fit into twelfths (4 × 3 = 12).
Change both fractions. Multiply top and bottom by the same number.
¼ = 3/12⅓ = 4/12Now add the tops.
3/12 + 4/12 = 7/12
Answer¼ + ⅓ = 7/12.
For older learners and grown-ups: a little more
The smallest common denominator is the LCM of the denominators. Mixed numbers: add the wholes and the fractions separately, then tidy up (2½ + 1⅔ = 3 + 7/6 = 4⅙).
Now practise it
