Every point is (x, y): how far right or left, then how far up or down.
Look: One point in each quarter.
✏️ Your turn!
Type your answer and press Check. Kutty will tell you if it is right.
1Which quarter is (−5, −1) in?
2y of any point on the x-axis?
3Distance from (1, 4) to (1, −2)?
! Careful!
✗Going up first for (−2, 1).
✓Along first: 2 left, then 1 up.
✗(0, −3) is in a quarter.
✓Points on an axis are in no quarter.

Every point is (x, y): how far right or left, then how far up or down.
The two axes cut the page into 4 quarters (quadrants). The signs tell you which one: (+, +) top right, (−, +) top left, (−, −) bottom left, (+, −) bottom right.
Think of it like thisLike finding a seat in a cinema: row and seat number. Negative just means left or down.
Solved together
Plot A(−2, 1), B(3, 1) and C(3, −3). What is the area of triangle ABC?
Plot each point: along first, then up or down.
AB goes straight across: 5 squares. BC goes straight down: 4 squares.
AB = 5, BC = 4It is a right triangle: half of base × height.
½ × 5 × 4 = 10
AnswerArea = 10 square units.
